Autumn 2014: Homelessness Action Week

Join us here in New Westminster in mid-October for Homelessness Action Week. We have a full slate of activities, starting on Monday October 13th, with lots of free services, food, and drink.

THANKSGIVING DINNER at Union Gospel Mission (658 Clarkson Street)

Doors for First Sitting will be open at 12 noon. FREE Dinner & Music!

Tickets will be issued at the door for each sitting. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Art Show (ART of DARKNESS) at the Russell Housing Centre (740 Carnarvon Street) at the Alexander Street entrance

New Westminster Homelessness Coalition Society (NWHCS) and Stride with Purpose present an ART exhibit by the Street Troupe Art Group and other artists:

11 am to 2 pm. FREE Admission. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Treats and music provided!

CONNECT DAY at Holy Trinity Cathedral (514 Carnarvon Street)

A morning designed to give people who are homeless access to a wide range of free information and services surrounding housing, health & wellness, and other support services—all under one roof.

  • 8:00 am – Breakfast (generously provided by Holy Trinity Cathedral). Tim Horton’s community cruiser in attendance.
  • 9:00 am to 12:00 noon – Homelessness individuals connect 1-on-1 with free services: Haircuts, Hearing Tests, Dentist, help to find Housing, Public Health Nurse, Employment Counselling, Paws for Hope, Financial Literacy, Mental Health and Substance Abuse support…and many more.
  • 12:00 noon – Lunch (generously provided by the Sikh Community)

SHARING OUR COMMUNITY TOUR

Come ride along on a FREE tour and learn about the organizations that are working to address the challenges of poverty and homelessness in the New Westminster community.
Tour starts at Purpose Society (40 Begbie Street) at 9:30 am and ends at the Russell (740 Carnarvon Street) at 1:45 pm. Afterwards, come see the Art Show (ART of DARKNESS)! EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Free snacks & beverages.

MOVIE NIGHT at the Rhoda Kaellis Housing Centre (1105 Royal Avenue)

  • 6:00 pm: “Celebrate What’s Right with the World” (2013):
    A film about approaching life with confidence, grace, and celebration. The stories and lessons included come from years as a photographer (DeWitt Jones) with National Geographic whose perspective changed his life and other lives as well.
  • 7:00 pm: “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006):
    A struggling salesman who becomes homeless (Will Smith) takes custody of his son (Jaden Smith) as he’s poised to begin a life-changing journey.

FREE admission! ALL are WELCOME! Popcorn/Snacks & Refreshments!

NWHCS 7TH ANNUAL FUNDRAISING DINNER/AUCTION at the Historic Columbia Theatre (530 Columbia Street)

Tickets: $75 each (tax receipts issued for allowable portion). Doors open at 5:30 pm – Dinner served at 6:30 pm.

Featuring MC Kathryn Gretsinger (CBC radio personality) and guest speakers:

Joe Calendino – Founder & Executive Director of Yo Bro Youth Initiative

Joe has over 4 years’ experience running gang and drug prevention programs for youth in some of the most vulnerable neighbourhoods. As a former member of the Hells Angels and recovering addict, Joe went from successful businessman to living drug addicted on the streets after losing everything to gangs and drugs. Joe has since dedicated himself to connecting with youth who are at risk of using drugs or joining gangs.

Sgt. Toby Hinton – VPD & Odd Squad Productions

Sergeant Toby Hinton is a police officer with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). He has served on the street as both a Constable and a Sergeant in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver for 24 years. He is a founding member of Odd Squad Productions, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing drug education for youth, peer-to-peer training, and film production.

Interfaith talk/discussion on this year’s Homelessness Action Week theme “Opening Doors, Opening Hearts” with:
