The events were well attended and we would like to thank all the volunteers and donors who helped out.

Join us at the Union Gospel Mission on Monday October 8th for Thanksgiving Dinner.

On Tuesday October 9th, Connect Day will be held at Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Take a tour of various residences on Wednesday October 10th, and end the evening with a movie night at the Hospitality Project.

On Thursday October 11th, two churches are hosting luncheons. In the evening our Fundraising dinner/auction will be held at the Columbia Theatre.

Finally, on Friday October 12th, St. Barnabas Church is hosting multi-faith prayer services with dinner provided by the Sikh Community.

We had twelve service providers in attendance and about 125 clients were able to take advantage of the services.

Our Coalition is an affiliation of more than 35 non-profit organizations, community, business and government representatives, committed to ending homelessness in New [...]]]> The New Westminster Homelessness Coalition would like to invite you to SAVE THE DATE for our 4th annual fundraising dinner on Thursday October 13th at the magnificently restored Columbia Theatre, Lafflines Comedy Club.

Our Coalition is an affiliation of more than 35 non-profit organizations, community, business and government representatives, committed to ending homelessness in New Westminster. Each year we raise public awareness of homelessness during a special week across BC called Homelessness Action Week (HAW: October 10-16, 2011).

We hope you’ll be our dinner guest on Thursday October 13th as Catherine Gretzinger of CBC radio hosts the evening, along with Bijan Nasiri Manesh as our thought provoking speaker on Harm Reduction.

Given that a portion of people who are homeless, also struggle with an addiction, Bijan will put forward Harm Reduction as a perspective designed to reduce the harmful consequences associated with high risk activities. This approach can take many forms, yet the essence is to meet people “where they’re at”, addressing conditions of use along with the use itself, while being open to outcomes other than abstinence or cessation of use.

As an international specialist involved in helping create alternative models of treatment and support services, his philosophy is that a place to call home is the first step in recovery. Bijan will share with us ideas on how to strengthen the already available efforts and projects in New Westminster.

The purpose of World Homeless Day is to draw attention to homeless people’s needs locally and provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness, while taking advantage of the stage an ‘international day’ provides.

The Official World Homeless Day website exists to resource local groups to take the concept of World Homeless Day and run with it to benefit homeless people locally in their area.

The members of the NWHCS envision a future where all the citizens in New Westminster have access to safe and affordable housing and supports and no one in the City is homeless.

Our long-term mission is to create a continuum of housing options and supports in the City of New Westminster for those people who are homeless, at risk of being homeless, vulnerable or requiring assistance to secure a home.

The Coalition agreed to incorporate in January of 2012, and became a society on May 31, 2012, in order to better succeed in our long-term mission to help those in need in New Westminster. So, officially, we are now the New Westminster Homelessness Coalition Society or NWHCS.
